The Begusarai Municipal Corporation has taken a significant technological leap to enhance urban management and public safety. The civic body has officially launched a comprehensive, CCTV-based monitoring system designed to track hygiene standards and actively discourage littering across the city.
A Network of Eyes for a Cleaner City
This ambitious project involves the installation of 317 high-resolution CCTV devices strategically placed at 98 key locations throughout Begusarai. The footage from these cameras is fed live to a central control room, creating a robust mechanism for real-time oversight. Municipal Commissioner Somesh Bahadur Mathur detailed the system's capabilities, stating that the cameras will operate 24×7 and are equipped with a four-hour battery backup to ensure uninterrupted surveillance. He further highlighted that 32 of these cameras offer 360-degree coverage, enabling intensive monitoring of critical areas.
Multi-Pronged Benefits: From Garbage to Crime
The primary objective of this surveillance network is to identify and penalize individuals who dump garbage on roads and in public places. Former Begusarai mayor Sanjay Singh, who congratulated the corporation on the initiative, emphasized this point. He explained that the cameras will capture clear images of offenders, helping authorities identify habitual violators and impose fines to deter such anti-social acts.
However, the benefits extend far beyond waste management. The system is poised to become a powerful tool for law enforcement and traffic regulation. Sanjay Singh noted that the feed will assist the district police and administration, which have their own control rooms, in monitoring criminal activity and identifying suspects. Furthermore, the cameras will play a crucial role in observing and managing traffic flow on the city's busy streets, potentially reducing congestion and accidents.

The launch has sparked hope among residents for improved road safety. Shivani, a teacher from the Harrakh locality, shared a personal incident where a friend was severely injured due to rash bike driving. She expressed optimism that the enhanced surveillance would help curb this menace. "I hope the move will also help in curbing the snatching menace on the roads," she added, voicing a common concern among citizens.
