Bengaluru Drive to Remove 1,581 Abandoned Vehicles Starts July 10

The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) and civic authorities will launch a drive to clear 1,581 abandoned vehicles across the city starting July 10, officials announced on Thursday.

Notices to Be Issued Before Towing

From Friday, BTP and corporation officials will paste a notice on each identified vehicle, giving owners a final chance to remove them voluntarily. Vehicles not claimed within the stipulated period will be towed to designated impound lots and may be scrapped if unclaimed.

The initiative aims to reclaim road space and improve traffic flow, as abandoned vehicles often obstruct movement and become breeding grounds for pests. According to a senior BTP officer, the list of 1,581 vehicles was compiled after a citywide survey over the past three months.

Scope of the Drive

The drive covers all eight traffic police zones in Bengaluru, with a focus on arterial roads, residential areas, and commercial hubs. Two-wheelers, cars, and larger vehicles are included. Owners can reclaim their vehicles by paying pending fines and towing charges.

"We urge citizens to cooperate and remove their abandoned vehicles voluntarily to avoid penalties," said a BTP official. The drive is part of a broader effort to decongest Bengaluru's roads, which have seen a surge in vehicle numbers.

Impact and Next Steps

Once cleared, the spaces will be used for parking or traffic calming measures. The BTP will continue monitoring for new abandoned vehicles and will take action under the Motor Vehicles Act. Citizens can report abandoned vehicles via the BTP helpline or app.
