Bengaluru RWAs to Get Priority in Tree Plantation Initiatives
Bengaluru RWAs to Get Priority in Tree Plantation

Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Bengaluru will receive first preference in tree-plantation initiatives across the city, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced on Tuesday. He directed officials to prioritise community participation while pulling up Forest Department officials over discrepancies in the city's tree plantation records.

Minister's Directive on Community Participation

During a review meeting, Minister Byre Gowda emphasised the need for involving local communities, particularly RWAs, in greening efforts. He stated that RWAs should be given the first opportunity to plant and maintain trees in their localities, ensuring better care and survival rates. The minister also instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for the next planting season, focusing on native species and proper maintenance.

Discrepancies in Tree Plantation Records

The minister expressed displeasure over inconsistencies in the Forest Department's data on tree plantations. He noted that reported numbers did not match ground realities, with many saplings either dead or missing. Byre Gowda warned of strict action against officials responsible for inflated figures and demanded a thorough audit of all plantation records from the past three years.

Impact and Next Steps

This move is expected to boost green cover in Bengaluru, which has seen rapid urbanisation. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Forest Department will collaborate with RWAs to identify suitable locations and species. A pilot project will be launched in select wards, with RWAs taking the lead in planting and monitoring. The minister also called for a citizen-friendly portal to track plantation progress and report issues.
