Bengaluru Authority Mandates 50km Pedestrian Pathway Development in Mahadevapura Zone

In a significant move to enhance urban walkability, Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao has issued directives for the development of 50 kilometers of safe and accessible pedestrian pathways in the Mahadevapura zone. The ambitious project is slated for completion within a strict two-month timeframe, with a primary focus on stretches along metro corridors to improve connectivity and safety for residents.

Walkathon Inspection Uncovers Infrastructure Deficiencies

The directive followed a comprehensive 10-kilometer walkathon inspection flagged off by Rao from Phoenix Mall to Hope Farm under the Bengaluru East City Corporation limits on Sunday. This event, attended by over 120 citizens, covered a continuous stretch along the Purple Line metro corridor, allowing officials to assess pedestrian infrastructure firsthand.

During the walk, several critical issues were identified, including:

  • Slab repairs required at 10 specific locations
  • Unauthorized vehicle parking obstructing pathways at two spots
  • Construction material dumped at one location
  • One instance of encroachment on pedestrian space
  • Four technical issues related to Bescom infrastructure

Officials were instructed to address these deficiencies immediately to ensure pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Comprehensive Measures for Pedestrian Mobility

Rao emphasized the urgency of creating uninterrupted pedestrian movement by directing authorities to:

  1. Remove all obstacles currently blocking footpaths
  2. Resolve bottlenecks hindering road-widening projects
  3. Clear encroachments that compromise pedestrian pathways

To support these initiatives, Rao assured that adequate funds would be allocated and suggested exploring partnerships with corporate organizations to expedite the development work. This collaborative approach aims to leverage private sector resources while maintaining public oversight.

Project Wakaluru: A City-Wide Footpath Review Initiative

This walkathon marked the 11th inspection under Project Wakaluru, an ongoing initiative through which 88 kilometers of footpaths across Bengaluru have been reviewed to date. The project represents a systematic effort to assess and improve pedestrian infrastructure throughout the city, with Mahadevapura now receiving prioritized attention due to its metro corridor significance.

The development of 50 kilometers of pedestrian pathways in Mahadevapura is expected to significantly enhance walkability, reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, and promote healthier urban mobility options. With the two-month deadline, authorities face a challenging timeline to transform identified deficiencies into safe, accessible pathways for Bengaluru's growing population.
