Bengaluru's Bannerghatta Road: A Commuter's Nightmare Amid Metro Progress
While the soon-to-open Namma Metro Pink Line promises a scenic cruise from Jayadeva Hospital towards Bannerghatta, offering sweeping views of verdant patches, lakes, and highrises, the road below presents a stark and troubling contrast. The 6.3-kilometer stretch from Jayadeva Hospital to Royal Meenakshi Mall has deteriorated into a commuter's nightmare, plagued by clouds of dust, poorly restored surfaces, and hazardous conditions.
Deterioration and Causes
The situation has worsened significantly after multiple rounds of work by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which involved repeated digging and substandard restoration. A civic officer revealed that authorities are attempting to rebuild the road with a budget of Rs 12 crore, though the actual requirement is estimated to be upwards of Rs 60 crore. This funding gap highlights the challenges in addressing the infrastructure woes.
A recent reality check indicates that while the stretch from Jayadeva Hospital is somewhat manageable, the section from the IIM-Bangalore campus is particularly treacherous. Thick layers of dust hang low, and half-dug roads filled with basalt create a hazardous environment for two-wheelers, increasing the risk of accidents. The congestion is exacerbated by vehicles funneling in from multiple directions, including JP Nagar, Hulimavu, BTM Layout, and Electronics City, all converging onto Bannerghatta Road towards MG Road.
Resident Complaints and Safety Concerns
Residents report that poor road surface quality and drainage issues have made commuting a daily struggle. With the Namma Metro Pink Line nearing launch, visibility has become a critical concern. Incidents such as pedestrians dodging open drains, accidentally dropping belongings, and falling have become common occurrences, according to local accounts.
Srikanth A, a 25-year-old commuter from Royal Meenakshi Mall to Jayanagar, expressed frustration: "Escaping an accident feels like a near miracle. It's hard to understand why this has been left in such a state for so long."
Other residents echoed similar sentiments:
- Arushi Singh (23), a Gottigere resident: "I've been commuting to Domlur on a two-wheeler for three years. The stretch is dusty due to incomplete roads, and visibility drops often. Areas near the IIMB Metro Station have worsened in the past two months."
- Yukthi (22), a commuter: "The road is in terrible condition with numerous potholes. During rains, it's impossible to distinguish potholes from stones or concrete chunks, making it feel like a death trap."
- Srikant Parthasarathy, an advocate and BTM Layout resident: "After Jayadeva Junction towards Vega City, the road becomes a pedestrian nightmare. For two-wheeler riders, it's a complete smoke show, forcing a choice between traffic chaos and pothole adventures."
- Snehasis Das, 54, a Begur Road resident: "The stretch from Gottigere to Vega City is the worst. While most of Bengaluru is well-planned, the road conditions here don't match the city's standard of living. I've never seen such dangerous potholes and poorly laid tar."
Official Response and Future Plans
A senior engineer from the Bengaluru South City Corporation explained that while BMRCL was initially expected to restore the road, the responsibility has now been vested with the corporation. With the current allocation of Rs 12 crore, officials admit that only basic asphalting can be undertaken. The corporation is exploring additional funding avenues, including a proposal to secure Rs 30 crore from the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
Officials state that the final goal is to comprehensively rebuild the road, which includes shifting utilities underground and developing proper footpaths. An engineer noted that BWSSB work is nearing completion, which may alleviate some of the ongoing disruptions.
As Bengaluru anticipates the benefits of the new Metro line, the plight of Bannerghatta Road serves as a reminder of the urgent need for coordinated infrastructure improvements to ensure safe and efficient commuting for all residents.
