BMC Unveils Ambitious Underground Tunnel Plan to Combat Mumbai's Traffic Woes
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put forward a groundbreaking proposal in its latest budget, aiming to address the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Mumbai through an innovative multimodal, multi-deck underground tunnel connectivity project. This ambitious initiative is designed to revolutionize urban mobility by incorporating multiple functionalities within a single infrastructure framework.
Innovative Design for Dual-Purpose Infrastructure
The proposed tunnel system will feature a sophisticated layered design, with one level dedicated exclusively to vehicular traffic, while another level will house utilities and drainage systems. This dual-purpose approach not only optimizes space but also enhances the city's resilience against environmental challenges. Specifically, the drainage component is engineered to play a crucial role in flood mitigation during periods of heavy rainfall, offering a proactive solution to Mumbai's frequent monsoon-related flooding issues.
A senior civic official elaborated on the project's rationale, stating, "Underground tunnel-based connectivity will be constructed at key traffic choke points to significantly relieve congestion. Given the high costs associated with tunnel construction, it is imperative to maximize their utility. For instance, the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) already incorporates a water pipeline within its tunnel. Following this model, we plan to integrate utilities beneath transport tunnels. International examples, such as Singapore's successful implementation of multimodal or multi-utility tunnels for transport and rainwater drainage, inspire our approach. The exact locations for these tunnels have not been finalized yet; this task will be handled by the project management consultant."
Financial and Implementation Details
The financial scale of this project is substantial, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 732 crore per kilometer. To move forward, the BMC has issued a work order to a consultant who will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive feasibility study, developing a master plan and Detailed Project Report (DPR), managing the bid process, and supervising the construction phase. This step marks a critical milestone in transforming the proposal from concept to reality, ensuring thorough planning and execution.
This initiative represents a significant leap in Mumbai's infrastructure development, potentially setting a benchmark for other metropolitan areas grappling with similar urban challenges.
