Minister Scindia Slams BSNL's 'Absurd' Lavish Arrangements for Director's Trip
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has strongly criticized the extravagant preparations made by state-run telecom company BSNL for director Vivek Banzal's now-cancelled trip to Prayagraj, labeling them as "improper and absurd." The minister emphasized that such actions violate established rules and traditions, declaring them completely unacceptable in the 21st century.
Four-Page Instructions Detail Extravagant Demands
The controversy erupted when a four-page office order detailing lavish arrangements for Banzal's planned two-day visit went viral on social media. The document outlined extensive requirements including eight sets of "snan" or bath kits for men and women containing towels, undergarments, slippers, combs, mirrors, soap, shampoo, and oil, along with bed sheets.
Additionally, the instructions called for arrangements at a hotel and circuit house featuring dry fruits, fruit bowls, towels, toiletries, and shaving kits for the director and other guests. Most notably, the plan involved deploying nearly 50 officials to attend to Banzal and a chief general manager during the visit, which was to include a bath in the Ganga river, temple visits, and meetings.
Immediate Action Taken Against Officials
In response to the uproar, Scindia announced that a show-cause notice has been issued to director Vivek Banzal with a seven-day response period. "I have made it very clear that this is improper and a violation of all the established rules and traditions," the minister told reporters. "It is completely unacceptable in 21st century. It is completely absurd and shocking."
BSNL has taken additional disciplinary measures, transferring two executives who were posted in Prayagraj - Brijendra Singh, principal general manager, and Jogeshwar Verma, deputy general manager. Verma, who was part of Singh's office, had issued the controversial instructions detailing the extravagant arrangements.
BSNL Pledges Strictest Possible Action
A BSNL official stated, "We will take strictest possible action. We don't want any distraction from BSNL's focus on improving customer service and network improvement." The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining proper conduct and avoiding misuse of official resources.
Following the controversy, Banzal called off his planned trip to Prayagraj. The telecom service officer, according to BSNL's website, holds a master's degree in computer science and an MBA, with his "never say rest" attitude and constant innovation credited with driving growth in the company's fixed-line business since 2016.
The website further notes that Banzal has been promoting and managing Bharat Fiber, BSNL IT framework, and other services, with his vision leading to the digitization of processes and introduction of innovative solutions for customers. However, these professional accomplishments have been overshadowed by the current controversy surrounding the extravagant travel arrangements.
