Census 2027 Embraces Digital Transformation with Self-Enumeration Launch in Gurgaon
In a significant move towards modernization, the Census 2027 process is set to begin with a pioneering digital initiative in Gurgaon. For the first time in India's census history, citizens will have the opportunity to independently fill out their details through an online portal or a dedicated mobile application. This self-enumeration facility marks a departure from traditional methods, aiming to enhance efficiency and citizen participation.
Digital Portal Goes Live on April 16
An official online portal, www.se.census.gov.in, will be activated on April 16, 2026, enabling residents to register and input their information autonomously. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar has issued directives to officials to promote awareness about this digital option across all villages and wards in Gurgaon. The goal is to achieve maximum citizen participation by ensuring that every individual is informed about the new self-enumeration process.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, "This time, the Census will be entirely based on a digital system." After submitting their details online, citizens will receive a unique self-enumeration ID via SMS and email. Subsequently, enumerators will visit the location solely for verification purposes, streamlining the overall procedure.
Two-Phase Census Schedule and Self-Enumeration Window
The Census 2027 will be conducted in two distinct phases:
- First Phase (House Listing): Scheduled from May 1 to May 30, 2026.
- Second Phase (Population Enumeration): Set to take place from February 9 to February 28, 2027.
Additionally, the self-enumeration option will be available to citizens from April 16 to April 30, 2026. To participate, residents must visit the official portal, enter their mobile number, and use the OTP received to log in and complete the process.
Special Mobile App for Enumerators and Training Initiatives
A specialized mobile application has been developed for enumerators, designed to function in offline mode. This app will automatically update data when a network connection becomes available, ensuring seamless operations even in remote areas with limited connectivity.
In preparation for the census, comprehensive training programs have been organized for enumerators and supervisors in the district. Training commenced on April 6 and is being conducted in 28 batches from April 6 to 8. Further sessions are scheduled for April 9 to 11, April 15 to 17, and April 20 to 22. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of these training initiatives to facilitate a smooth and efficient census process.
Administrative Directives and Citizen Participation
The administration has requested updated staff lists from various departments, but these have not been submitted yet. In response, the Deputy Commissioner has issued strict instructions to department heads to provide their staff lists promptly to avoid any disruptions in the census work.
Highlighting the critical role of public involvement, the Deputy Commissioner stated, "Active participation of common citizens is very important for making Census-2027 a success." Officials have been tasked with spreading awareness about the self-enumeration facility at every village and ward level to encourage a high number of registrations.
Citizens are urged to provide accurate and clear responses to all questions, as this is legally mandatory. The digital approach aims to make the census process more transparent, accessible, and efficient, reflecting a significant step forward in India's demographic data collection efforts.
