In a significant effort to accommodate the festive rush, Central Railway (CR) successfully operated 862 Holi special trains alongside its regular services. This initiative was designed to assist passengers traveling to celebrate Holi with their families and friends across various regions.

Over the four-day period from February 27 to March 2, leading up to the Holi festival, Central Railway transported an impressive 24 lakh passengers through a combination of regular and special trains. Notably, this total included 7 lakh passengers originating from Mumbai, highlighting the city's major role in the festive travel surge.

Distribution of Holi Special Trains

The special trains were strategically deployed to connect key destinations, with a detailed breakdown as follows:

  • 409 trains for intra-state travel within Maharashtra
  • 142 trains to Uttar Pradesh
  • 82 trains to Bihar
  • 21 trains to Goa

These services catered to popular routes, ensuring comprehensive coverage for holidaymakers.

Types of Services and Occupancy Rates

The Holi special trains offered a variety of accommodations to meet diverse passenger needs. These included fully air-conditioned specials, unreserved specials, and trains with a mix of AC, sleeper, and general second class coaches. Remarkably, 670 of the Holi special trains operated by Central Railway achieved an occupancy rate of 105%, indicating high demand and efficient utilization.

The planning and operation of these additional trains was a continuous and dynamic process. Central Railway utilized multiple communication channels to assess demand in real-time. Inputs were gathered 24x7 from sources such as media reports, social media platforms, the railway integrated helpline number 139, and details of waitlisted passengers in the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). Based on this comprehensive data, the number of trains and trips were augmented to effectively meet the travel requirements on specific routes.

This proactive approach ensured that the railway network could handle the increased passenger load during the Holi festival, providing a smoother travel experience for millions.
