A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from Chandigarh met the Municipal Corporation Commissioner on Friday to address grievances faced by auto rickshaw drivers in the city. The primary issue raised was the Rs 28 parking fee levied on auto drivers for pick-up and drop-off services, which the party deemed unjustified.
Demand for Free Entry Window
AAP state observer Vineet Verma urged the official to consider the difficulties faced by auto drivers and proposed a 15-minute free entry period for picking up and dropping off passengers. Verma argued that if a vehicle remains parked beyond that duration, charges could be applied as per existing rules. However, he emphasized that collecting a fee solely for the act of picking up or dropping passengers is not reasonable.
The delegation included city AAP president Vijaypal Singh, general secretary Omkar Singh Aulakh, and former Mayor Kuldeep Dhalor. They collectively stressed the need for immediate relief for auto drivers who are burdened by the additional cost.
Impact on Auto Drivers
The Rs 28 fee, imposed under the pretext of pick-up and drop-off service, has been a point of contention among auto drivers who argue that it eats into their daily earnings. Many drivers operate on thin margins, and such charges can significantly affect their livelihood. The AAP delegation highlighted that the fee is particularly harsh given the competitive nature of the auto-rickshaw business in Chandigarh, where drivers already face challenges from app-based cab services and rising fuel prices.
The delegation met the MC Commissioner in a bid to find a resolution that balances the city's revenue needs with the welfare of auto drivers. They expressed hope that the commissioner would review the policy and provide a favorable decision soon.
