Delhi Government Greenlights Major Road Infrastructure Overhaul
In a significant move to enhance urban mobility and public health, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has given her approval for a comprehensive road redevelopment project valued at Rs 802.2 crore. This ambitious initiative is specifically designed to transform the capital's road network into pothole-free, durable, and dust-resistant thoroughfares, addressing long-standing complaints from residents and commuters alike.
Project Scope and Funding Details
The project will encompass nearly 400 kilometers of roads spread across 45 assembly constituencies, ensuring widespread improvements throughout the city. More than 241 major roads have been identified for upgrades, with the plan adopting a 'wall-to-wall carpeting' model. This approach focuses on uniformly strengthening entire road stretches, moving away from the traditional patchwork repairs that often lead to recurring issues.
Financial backing for this massive undertaking comes from both central and state sources. Out of the total project cost, a substantial Rs 643.4 crore will be allocated from the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) of the Union government. The remaining Rs 158.9 crore will be contributed by the Delhi government, demonstrating a collaborative effort in urban infrastructure development.
Technical Specifications and Key Road Stretches
The road redevelopment will follow rigorous engineering standards, involving multiple critical phases. These include a thorough technical evaluation of the base layer, targeted strengthening where necessary, comprehensive drainage planning to prevent waterlogging, and final high-quality carpeting to ensure longevity and smooth travel.
Several prominent road stretches have been prioritized for redevelopment under this project. Key arteries identified include:
- Outer Ring Road
- Rao Tula Ram Marg
- August Kranti Marg
- Lala Lajpat Rai Marg
- Dr KN Katju Marg
- Shamnath Marg
- DB Gupta Road
- Numerous roads in east and north-east Delhi
Execution Strategy and Long-Term Goals
The Public Works Department (PWD) will be responsible for executing this project, with plans to carry it out in carefully managed phases. This phased approach is intended to minimize traffic disruptions and ensure that daily commutes are not severely impacted during the construction period.
According to earlier statements from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government has set clear targets for road improvements. Out of the total 1,400 kilometers of roads managed by the PWD, 400 kilometers are scheduled to be carpeted within this year. The broader vision aims for 100% coverage within three years, with the specific goal of eliminating exposed soil that contributes to dust pollution—a major concern for air quality in the national capital.
