Delhi Government Announces Major Expansion of Atal Canteen Services and Urban Welfare Initiatives
In a significant move to enhance public welfare services, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Friday a comprehensive expansion of the Atal Canteen program along with several new urban development projects. The initiatives aim to improve accessibility, efficiency, and support for vulnerable populations across the city.
Extended Operating Hours for Atal Canteens
The most immediate change affects the operating hours of Atal Canteens, which provide subsidized meals to residents. Lunch service will now be available from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM, extending the previous timing of 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM by one hour in the morning. Dinner service will run from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM, maintaining the same closing time but starting 30 minutes earlier than the previous 6:30 PM opening. This adjustment is designed to accommodate more people, particularly those with early work schedules or limited time windows for meals.
New Welfare Projects for Gig Workers and Slum Dwellers
Under the directives of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), several new projects have been approved to address urban challenges:
- Resting Centers for Gig Workers and Laborers: Integrated with Atal Canteens, these centers will provide temporary shelter and rest facilities for gig economy workers and daily wage laborers, offering a reprieve during breaks or after long shifts.
- Housing Allotment in Savda-Ghevra: Approximately 1,000 slum dwellers will be allocated housing in the Savda-Ghevra area, part of ongoing efforts to improve living conditions and reduce homelessness.
- Reorganization of Canteens and Distribution Centers: Around 100 Atal Canteens and distribution centers will be reorganized to boost operational efficiency, ensuring smoother service delivery and reduced wait times.
Enhanced Financial Powers and Administrative Extensions
To expedite project execution and streamline decision-making, the financial approval limit for the DUSIB Chief Executive Officer has been increased from Rs 3 crore to Rs 10 crore. This change is expected to accelerate the implementation of welfare schemes and infrastructure projects without unnecessary bureaucratic delays.
Additionally, the tenure of agencies managing shelter homes has been extended until May 31 of this year, or until new agencies are appointed to take over. This ensures continuity of services during the transition period.
Focus on Accountability and Impact Assessment
Chief Minister Gupta has directed DUSIB to prepare a detailed report on its work over the past year. This report will serve to assess the impact of existing programs, track progress on ongoing initiatives, and identify areas needing improvement. The move underscores the government's commitment to transparency and data-driven policy-making in urban development.
These announcements reflect a broader strategy to strengthen Delhi's social safety net and urban infrastructure, targeting key issues such as food security, housing, and support for informal sector workers. The expanded Atal Canteen hours alone are projected to benefit thousands of daily users, while the new projects aim to create a more inclusive and resilient urban environment.
