Delhi Government Approves Inclusion of Transgender Passengers in Free Bus Travel Scheme
The Delhi government has taken a significant step towards social inclusion by approving a proposal to extend its free bus travel scheme to transgender passengers. This decision was announced in a statement from the chief minister's office on Monday, marking a pivotal moment in the city's public transport policy.
Eligibility and Implementation Details
According to government officials, all women and transgender individuals possessing Aadhaar cards in Delhi will now be eligible for the Saheli Pink cards. This initiative builds on the existing scheme, which has already seen over 1 lakh cards issued since its launch earlier this month. The facility will be implemented using the same pattern and mechanism as the current free travel scheme for women passengers in Delhi buses.
The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Officials emphasized that the move aims to ensure members of the transgender community can travel safely and conveniently across the city without facing financial barriers. To facilitate the issuance of these smart cards, the Delhi government has established 50 authorized centres throughout the city.
Additional Benefits and Government Commitment
Beyond free bus travel, holders of the Saheli Pink card can also avail a 10 percent discount on the Delhi Metro and Rapid Rail services. This comprehensive approach underscores the government's dedication to enhancing mobility and accessibility for all citizens.
In a statement, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the broader vision behind this initiative. "This important initiative reflects the Rekha Gupta government's commitment to social inclusion, dignity, and equal access to public services for all sections of society," she said. Gupta further added, "The government remains committed to building a more inclusive, equitable and compassionate Delhi, where every citizen is able to access opportunities and public services with dignity."
Continuity of Existing Services
Gupta also reassured women passengers that free travel in public transport buses through pink tickets will continue for an additional three months. She urged them not to worry or rush to obtain the Saheli Pink cards, ensuring a smooth transition and continued access to benefits.
The Saheli Pink card, part of the Pink National Common Mobility (PNCM) card system, was officially launched by President Droupadi Murmu earlier this month. This expansion of the scheme represents a forward-thinking approach to public transport, aligning with global best practices in urban mobility and social equity.
