Delhi LG and CM Inaugurate 25 New Atal Canteens to Boost Affordable Food Access
In a significant move to enhance food security and affordability for residents, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly inaugurated 25 new Atal Aahar Kendra canteens across the national capital on Tuesday. This expansion marks a major step in the government's efforts to provide subsidized, nutritious meals to the public, particularly targeting low-income groups and daily wage earners.
Expanding the Network of Affordable Meal Centers
The inauguration ceremony, held at a central location in Delhi, saw the participation of key officials and community representatives. The new canteens are strategically located in various districts, including densely populated and underserved areas, to ensure wider accessibility. Each Atal Canteen will offer meals at highly subsidized rates, with breakfast priced at just Rs 5 and lunch or dinner at Rs 10, making it one of the most affordable food initiatives in the region.
Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in supporting the underprivileged. "The Atal Canteens are not just about providing food; they are about dignity and sustenance for every citizen. We are committed to ensuring that no one in Delhi goes hungry," he stated during the event. He highlighted that the expansion aligns with the vision of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, after whom the canteens are named, to foster social welfare and inclusivity.
Government Collaboration for Public Welfare
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta praised the collaborative effort between the Lieutenant Governor's office and the Delhi government in launching these canteens. "This initiative reflects our shared commitment to public service. By working together, we can address critical issues like hunger and malnutrition more effectively," she said. Gupta added that the canteens will also generate employment opportunities, with local residents being hired to manage operations, thereby boosting the local economy.
The Atal Canteens are designed to serve hygienic and balanced meals, prepared under strict quality control measures. Menu items include staples like dal, rice, roti, and seasonal vegetables, ensuring nutritional value. The canteens will operate from early morning to late evening, catering to different meal times and accommodating the schedules of workers and students.
Impact and Future Plans
With the addition of these 25 new outlets, the total number of Atal Canteens in Delhi now exceeds 100, significantly expanding the network since its inception. Officials reported that existing canteens serve thousands of meals daily, with high demand from construction workers, rickshaw pullers, and students. The expansion is expected to double the daily meal capacity, reaching more beneficiaries across the city.
Authorities have also announced plans to integrate technology for better management, including digital payment options and real-time monitoring of food quality and distribution. This move aims to enhance transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the benefits reach the intended recipients without delays or discrepancies.
The inauguration event concluded with a visit to one of the new canteens, where Saxena and Gupta interacted with beneficiaries and staff, underscoring the government's hands-on approach to welfare schemes. This initiative is part of broader efforts to combat food insecurity in urban areas, with similar models being considered for replication in other states.
