Delhi Traffic Police Proposes Major Infrastructure Project to Tackle Sardar Patel Marg Gridlock
In a significant move to address chronic traffic woes, the Delhi Traffic Police, New Delhi range, has formally proposed the construction of a 5.3-kilometer elevated road or tunnel along Sardar Patel Marg. This key arterial road, stretching from Talkatora Stadium to Dhaula Kuan, has long been plagued by severe congestion due to escalating vehicular pressure.
Background and Rationale for the Proposal
The initiative comes after previous attempts to widen Sardar Patel Marg were deemed unfeasible because of the Central Ridge, a protected green area that borders the stretch. To avoid disturbing this ecologically sensitive flora, the new project aims to create an alternative bypass. In its proposal, the Delhi Traffic Police highlighted that Sardar Patel Marg currently features only two lanes on each carriageway, a design ill-suited to handle the surging traffic volumes, particularly towards Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Key stakeholders, including the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Public Works Department (PWD), and Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre (UTTIPEC), have been copied on the proposal letter. The road serves as a critical link through Chanakyapuri, Delhi's diplomatic enclave, and connects to Dhaula Kuan, a major junction that facilitates access to the airport and Gurgaon for much of the city.
Current Traffic Challenges and Impact
Sardar Patel Marg is flanked by state bhavans, residential areas, and prominent landmarks, bearing a traffic load that far exceeds its capacity. During peak hours, the situation deteriorates significantly as vehicles merge from feeder roads such as Malcha Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Abai Marg, and Shanti Path. This influx causes cars to move bumper-to-bumper, with each entry point further slowing down the main lanes.
- Traffic often crawls at a snail's pace, with snarls consuming 20 to 30 minutes of commuters' time.
- Abai Marg, used extensively by office-goers and those returning from South Campus, contributes heavily to the congestion.
- While some vehicles divert towards Malcha Marg and Manas Marg, the overall flow remains overwhelming.
The proposal also notes that the recent construction of new naval and army headquarters in Delhi Cantt has amplified the need for improved connectivity. Additionally, frequent VIP movements along the route frequently lead to restrictions and delays, exacerbating the gridlock.
Expected Benefits and Travel Time Reduction
The proposed tunnel or elevated road is projected to offer substantial relief not only for Sardar Patel Marg but also for Vande Mataram Marg. Commuters heading towards IGI Airport and Gurgaon are expected to be the primary beneficiaries.
- Travel time from Talkatora Stadium to Dhaula Kuan, which currently takes nearly 40 minutes during peak hours, is anticipated to plummet to just 10 minutes post-construction.
- The project promises a drastic reduction in travel durations from various parts of the city to Dhaula Kuan.
- By bypassing the congested surface roads, the infrastructure aims to enhance overall traffic flow and reduce environmental pollution from idling vehicles.
When contacted for comments, the New Delhi Municipal Council did not provide an immediate response regarding the Delhi Traffic Police's proposal. The success of this initiative could mark a transformative step in easing Delhi's persistent traffic bottlenecks and improving urban mobility for residents and visitors alike.
