Delhi Women Must Get Pink Saheli Smart Card for Free Bus Travel

Delhi Women Must Obtain Pink Saheli Smart Card for Complimentary Bus Rides Starting August 1

Starting August 1, 2026, women in Delhi will need a Pink Saheli smart card to travel for free on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses. The Delhi government announced that the existing system of showing a photo ID card will no longer be accepted. This move aims to streamline the scheme and ensure only eligible women benefit from the free travel initiative.

Registration Process and Eligibility

The Delhi government has opened registrations for the Pink Saheli smart card. Women can apply online through the official website or visit designated centres across the city. To be eligible, applicants must be women residents of Delhi. The card will be linked to the beneficiary's Aadhaar number to prevent misuse. According to a senior official, the government expects to issue over 10 lakh cards in the first phase.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot stated, "The Pink Saheli smart card will ensure that free bus travel for women is more secure and efficient. We urge all women to apply early to avoid last-minute rush." The scheme has been popular since its launch in 2019, with over 1.5 crore women benefiting annually.

Impact on Daily Commuters

The new system is expected to reduce fraud and improve data collection on ridership patterns. Women who currently use their voter ID or other documents for free travel must switch to the smart card. The government has set up help desks at major bus terminals and metro stations to assist with registration. The deadline is strict; after July 31, 2026, only smart card holders will be allowed free travel.

This initiative is part of the Delhi government's broader push towards digital governance and women's empowerment. The smart card can also be used for other services in the future, such as access to municipal facilities or subsidies.
