Shillong District Coordination Meeting Focuses on Monsoon Preparedness
A crucial district coordination meeting of the Incident Response Team (IRT) for East Khasi Hills was conducted on Wednesday in Shillong. The primary objective was to thoroughly review the preparedness of all departments and enhance coordination mechanisms to effectively handle potential calamities during the upcoming monsoon season.
Meeting Details and Leadership
The meeting was convened at the office of the deputy commissioner, who also serves as the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). It was chaired by DC Rosetta Mary Kurbah, who emphasized the urgency of pre-monsoon preparedness measures. Under her leadership, it was decided that all departments must prioritize these initiatives to mitigate risks associated with heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.
Key Preparedness Measures Announced
An official statement released after the meeting outlined specific actions to be undertaken. These include comprehensive inspections of flood-prone and landslide-prone areas across the district. Additionally, assessments will be conducted on vulnerable trees and electricity lines that could collapse or pose significant hazards during periods of strong winds and intense rainfall. The focus is on proactive identification and remediation of potential threats to public safety and infrastructure.
Importance of Coordination and Readiness
The meeting underscored the critical need for seamless inter-departmental coordination to ensure a swift and efficient response in the event of disasters. By reviewing and strengthening preparedness plans, the authorities aim to minimize the impact of monsoon-related incidents on communities in East Khasi Hills. This collaborative effort is part of broader disaster management strategies to safeguard residents and property during the challenging weather season.
