Gunadala Flyover Project in Vijayawada Gains Momentum After 20-Year Wait
After nearly two decades of delays and uncertainty, the long-pending flyover project at Gunadala in Vijayawada is finally moving towards reality, bringing significant relief to lakhs of commuters who have endured severe traffic congestion for years.
Railways Initiate Crucial Steps for Construction
The Railway Department has initiated steps to construct two crucial flyovers in the area. The tender process for the flyover on the Kolkata railway line near Gunadala station has already been completed, while the long-pending proposal for a flyover over the Gudivada track — considered the most critical stretch — is in the final stages of approval.
Historical Context and Challenges
Gunadala, a densely populated area with nearly two lakh residents, has been facing severe traffic congestion for years due to multiple canal crossings over the railway track. The demand for a flyover dates back to 2001. Although the project was sanctioned in 2009 with an estimated cost of ₹30 crore and the foundation stone was laid, the works were stalled in 2010 due to political and administrative hurdles.
Over the years, the project remained neglected, with departments like R&B and the municipal corporation unable to take it forward. However, recent developments indicate a renewed focus, with coordination between the Railways and state departments nearing completion.
Current Progress and Future Plans
According to Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), only minor clearance from the Irrigation Department is pending for the Gudivada track flyover. Once approved, both flyovers will be taken up simultaneously. Officials aim to complete the projects ahead of the Krishna Pushkaram in 2028, especially as Gunadala railway station is developed as a satellite hub for the city.
Additionally, proposals for rail overbridges at other locations like Eelaprolu and Rayanapadu are also progressing, indicating a broader push to ease traffic congestion in and around Vijayawada.
