Haryana CM Directs Major Overhaul of Gurugram Water Supply Channel with Enhanced Capacity
In a significant move to bolster water infrastructure, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday ordered substantial revisions to the Gurugram Water Supply Channel project. The CM mandated an increase in its capacity to 1,000 cusecs and set a strict deadline for completion within two-and-a-half years.
Key Decisions from the Standing Finance Committee Meeting
Presiding over a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee, CM Saini reviewed the re-modelling plans for the channel. The meeting was attended by key officials including Chief Principal Secretary to the CM Rajesh Khullar, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, and Principal Secretary to the CM Arun Gupta, among other officers.
The CM emphasized that the 70-km-long channel, to be constructed from Kakroi Head in Sonipat to the Basai water works in Gurugram, will initially supply 686 cusecs of water. This volume is projected to be sufficient to meet Gurugram's water requirements until the year 2050.
Project Details and Enhanced Capacity
With an estimated cost of around Rs 1,993 crore, the project involves laying a fully underground pipeline. This design is expected to not only ensure efficient water delivery but also help eliminate issues related to water theft.
CM Saini further directed that the capacity of the supply channel be enhanced to 1,000 cusecs. This upgrade aims to benefit a larger population over an extended period, ensuring long-term water security for the region.
Additional Water Sources and Regional Provisions
Officials informed the CM that Gurugram will also receive an additional 500 cusecs of water from the NCR Canal. This will bring the total projected water supply to 1,500 cusecs in the coming years, significantly boosting the city's water resources.
In a separate provision, the Mewat region will be allocated 389 cusecs of drinking water, addressing the needs of this area as part of the broader water management strategy.
Transparency and Accelerated Timeline
The CM stressed the importance of executing the project with utmost transparency and adherence to high-quality standards. He made it clear that no negligence would be tolerated in the implementation process.
To ensure timely delivery, CM Saini set a target to complete the drinking water supply project within two and a half years. He directed officers to maintain continuous monitoring and strive to finish the project approximately three months ahead of schedule, underscoring the urgency of meeting Gurugram's growing water demands.
