Himachal Pradesh Government Activates 24/7 Emergency Response Amid Heavy Snowfall
The Himachal Pradesh government has taken decisive action in response to the ongoing heavy snowfall across the state, issuing comprehensive instructions to all District Disaster Management Authorities to maintain their District Emergency Operation Centres operational on a 24/7 basis. This directive comes as the region grapples with significant snowfall, with reports indicating that Kothi in Kinnaur district recorded the highest accumulation of 105 cm.
Strategic Deployment of Resources and Clear Instructions
Under the guidance of Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) KK Pant, authorities have been mandated to conduct thorough reviews of emergency response and evacuation plans, particularly for areas vulnerable to snowfall and potential flooding. The government has emphasized the importance of issuing timely warnings and advisories to ensure the safety of the general public, tourists, and travellers navigating the challenging conditions.
Key measures implemented include:
- Public Works Department: Directed to deploy snow clearance machinery, including JCBs and snow-cutters, at strategic locations to facilitate the swift restoration of roads affected by snowfall.
- State Electricity Board: Instructed to keep emergency response teams on standby to ensure rapid restoration of power supply in case of disruptions and to arrange power backup for essential services.
- Jal Shakti Department: Tasked with ensuring uninterrupted drinking water supply and maintaining sanitation services in snowfall-affected and high-risk areas.
Enhanced Monitoring and Coordination Efforts
The state administration has ordered special monitoring for urban low-lying areas and other vulnerable locations, with departmental responsibilities clearly defined to avoid any lapses in preparedness. To minimize risks associated with the adverse weather, authorities have been directed to regulate traffic on snowbound routes and restrict tourists from entering high-risk zones, accompanied by the issuance of comprehensive travel advisories.
Furthermore, all departments have been instructed to maintain constant coordination with both the State Emergency Operation Centre and District Emergency Operation Centres, submitting daily situation reports to ensure a unified and effective response.
Public Appeal and Safety Advisories
In a bid to safeguard lives and property, the Himachal Pradesh administration has made a heartfelt appeal to the general public and tourists, urging them to adhere strictly to weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during this period of severe weather conditions. This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to disaster preparedness and public safety in the face of natural challenges.
The coordinated efforts across multiple departments highlight a robust framework aimed at mitigating the impact of snowfall and ensuring that essential services remain functional, thereby protecting the well-being of residents and visitors alike in the picturesque yet challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh.
