Indore's Spectacular Civic Feat: From Holi Chaos to Clean Streets in 34 Minutes
As the sun dipped below the horizon at the historic Rajwada Palace on Sunday, the aftermath of Rangpanchmi celebrations painted a vivid picture of joyous chaos. Over five lakh enthusiastic participants had transformed the area into a vibrant canvas, leaving behind thousands of tonnes of wet gulal, discarded footwear, and drenched clothing. In any other urban center, this scenario would have spelled a week-long clean-up nightmare, but in Indore—the nation's eight-time cleanliness champion—it took a mere 34 minutes to restore the heart of the city to its pristine state.
A Colourful Battlefield Transformed by Civic Discipline
The traditional Rangpanchmi Gair procession turned Rajwada into a colourful battlefield of joy, with thousands of kilograms of Tesu flower gulal and lakhs of litres of water sprayed from high-pressure cannons. This festive deluge coated the streets in a thick, colourful sludge, creating a challenging clean-up task. However, as the final float passed through Rajwada square, the celebration of hues seamlessly transitioned into a celebration of civic responsibility and efficiency.
Under the direct supervision of Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) Commissioner Kshitij Singhal, a pre-positioned 'cleanliness strike force' sprang into action with military precision. This dedicated team included over 400 safai mitras (sanitation workers), supported by an impressive arsenal of machinery: 10 mechanical sweeping machines, six earth movers, seven dumpers, three long-hauling vehicles, 30 open waste-collection vehicles, and three tractors. Additionally, 20 high-pressure jet machines were deployed to scrub the stubborn stains of gulal from the historic pavements.
Strategic Waste Management and Civic Pride
By the time the clocks marked approximately half an hour, the Rajwada area and its surrounding five-kilometer route were spotless. Around a dozen truckloads of sludge, discarded footwear, and plastic waste had been efficiently removed and transported to processing plants. Mayor Bhargava emphasized, "This is the specialty of Indore and the Indore Municipal Corporation. While we celebrate our traditions with unparalleled enthusiasm, we never compromise on our commitment to the environment and cleanliness."
The success of this rapid clean-up operation hinged on a long-hauling strategy, where waste was not merely relocated but immediately evacuated from the site. Commissioner Singhal and Additional Commissioner Prakhar Singh revealed that the waste management plan was as meticulously detailed as the security arrangements, with specific teams assigned to different segments of the route to ensure no corner was neglected. "Rangpanchami's record-breaking clean-up serves as a reminder that for Indoreans, cleanliness is not a chore—it is a matter of the city's pride," Commissioner Singhal stated.
This event underscores Indore's unwavering dedication to maintaining its title as India's cleanest city, blending cultural fervor with environmental stewardship in a display of civic excellence that sets a national benchmark.
