Major Highway Closure in Maharashtra for Bridge Reconstruction
In a significant development impacting regional connectivity, the vital highway stretch between Karad and Chiplun in Ratnagiri district has been officially closed to all traffic for a period of two months. This extensive closure is necessary to facilitate the complete demolition and subsequent reconstruction of the crucial Dhande Bridge, alongside extensive concreting work on market roads in Satara's Patan town. This ambitious project marks the beginning of a massive infrastructure overhaul for the entire region.
Impact on Regional Mobility and Traffic Flow
The closure directly affects the National Highway 166E, one of the most vital ghat routes that seamlessly links western Maharashtra with the scenic Konkan coast. This highway is heavily relied upon by countless travelers from major cities including Pune, Mumbai, Solapur, and Sangli who are heading towards Ratnagiri. For a vast majority, this route represents the fastest and most dependable passage through the challenging hill terrain.
Until this closure, both light vehicles and multi-axle heavy vehicles used this highway without interruption. Authorities have now implemented specific diversion plans. While a bypass has been arranged for light vehicles, heavy vehicles face a considerably more challenging and lengthy alternative route.
Detailed Diversion Routes for Commuters
The alternate route designated for smaller vehicles passes through Nerle Gound. However, a critical structural limitation exists here: a bridge constructed in 1970 is unable to bear the weight of heavy traffic. Consequently, trucks and state transport buses are being systematically diverted via the longer and more winding Amba Ghat route.
"This diversion will stretch travel time for heavy vehicles from approximately three hours to nearly four hours, with the travel distance almost doubling to 173 kilometers from the original 95 kilometers," explained Inspector V G Dhas of the Satara district traffic police. The Amba Ghat diversion specifically passes through Karad, Pachwad, Undale, Kokrud, Malkapur, Amba Ghat, and Sangameshwar.
Project Timeline and Official Directives
The infrastructure project was originally slated to commence in late March. The Satara police had even issued preliminary notifications detailing the proposed traffic diversions at that time. However, the plans encountered a temporary roadblock when a major tourism festival in the region took precedence, delaying the start.
Officials have confirmed that light vehicles are being redirected through Navarasta, Gavhanwadi Phata, and Nerle Gound, effectively skirting Patan town. Notably, Patan is the hometown of Satara's guardian minister and state tourism minister, Shambhuraj Desai. Authorities assure that adequate police deployment is in place across all diversion points to ensure smooth traffic management and minimize disruptions.
The directive for this large-scale project came on March 27, when Minister Shambhuraj Desai instructed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to proceed with the demolition of the old Dhande Bridge, construct a new, modern bridge, and convert Patan's battered internal roads into concrete surfaces. "We have told the police department to ensure commuters and locals can navigate the alternative routes easily, and that heavy vehicles are strictly diverted through Amba Ghat, not roads meant for light vehicles," Minister Desai stated earlier, emphasizing the need for orderly traffic management during the construction period.
