The operator of a private bus in Kerala, which recently gained attention for offering free travel to men, has been fined for violating its permit conditions. The bus, named "Little Flower," operates on the Aluva-Manjaly route in Ernakulam district.
Fine imposed for cancelling scheduled trip
The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) imposed the fine after the bus allegedly cancelled a scheduled trip without prior approval. According to officials, the cancellation violated the terms of its permit, which mandates that all scheduled trips must be operated as per the approved timetable.
A senior MVD officer stated, "The bus operator was found to have cancelled a trip without valid reason. Such actions disrupt public transport services and inconvenience passengers. Hence, a penalty was levied." The exact amount of the fine has not been disclosed.
Controversy over free travel scheme
The bus had recently made headlines for a unique promotional scheme where men could travel for free, while women and children were charged regular fares. The initiative was intended to attract male passengers, but it drew criticism from women's rights groups and transport authorities.
Critics argued that the scheme was discriminatory and violated gender equality norms. However, the bus operator defended the move, claiming it was a marketing strategy to boost ridership.
