Kochi Corporation Initiates Eviction Drive for Konthuruthy River Rehabilitation Project
In a significant move to restore the Konthuruthy Canal, the Kochi Corporation has commenced eviction proceedings as part of its river rehabilitation project. This action follows a directive from the High Court, which mandates the widening of the canal to its original dimensions to improve water flow and environmental conditions.
Financial Assistance Disbursed to Beneficiaries
As part of the rehabilitation package, the corporation has disbursed financial assistance of Rs 14 lakh each to 80 beneficiaries. The funds were transferred directly to their bank accounts after thorough verification of all required documents. This process is being carried out under the direct supervision of Mayor V K Minimol, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
The beneficiaries who received the amount have voluntarily handed over their buildings to the corporation. Subsequently, the engineering wing has officially taken over these structures and transferred them to zonal officials for demolition. This coordinated effort aims to facilitate the smooth progression of the rehabilitation project.
Addressing Discrepancies and Extending Deadlines
Eight beneficiaries encountered discrepancies in their bank documents, delaying their fund disbursement. However, these issues are being rectified, and the affected individuals are expected to receive their funds by Monday. Mayor Minimol reported that all but 20 families have cooperated with the proceedings so far.
For those yet to submit the necessary documents, the corporation has granted an extension until April 13. This flexibility is crucial as the entire process must be completed and a report submitted to the court before April 16, in strict adherence to judicial directives.
Comprehensive Rehabilitation for 126 Families
In total, 126 families are being rehabilitated under this ambitious project. The total required amount for the initiative is Rs 17.64 crore, with the Kochi Corporation bearing the major share of the financial burden. Specifically, Rs 11.83 crore has been allocated from the plan fund and PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) allocations, supplemented by Rs 4.54 crore from the corporation's own funds.
This brings the corporation's total contribution to Rs 16.38 crore. The remaining Rs 1.26 crore is being provided by the state government through the LIFE Mission, highlighting a collaborative effort between local and state authorities.
Enhanced Financial Support and Streamlined Processes
Notably, the corporation decided to provide Rs 14 lakh per family, which is significantly higher than the usual Rs 9.25 lakh offered under standard housing schemes. This enhanced financial support aims to better assist displaced families in securing new accommodations and rebuilding their lives.
To avoid delays often associated with phased payments, special government approval was obtained to disburse the entire amount in a single instalment. This streamlined approach ensures that beneficiaries receive the full assistance promptly, facilitating a smoother transition.
Broader Objectives and Future Plans
According to corporation officials, the initiative not only focuses on the restoration of the Konthuruthy Canal but also aims to ensure better living conditions for the displaced families. With permission granted to purchase land even outside the corporation limits, the project seeks to provide sustainable and improved housing options for those affected.
This comprehensive rehabilitation effort underscores the corporation's commitment to balancing urban development with social welfare, ensuring that environmental restoration goes hand-in-hand with community support and enhanced quality of life for all residents involved.
