Kochi Metro Announces Major Service Extension to 11 PM from 2026
In response to a steady surge in ridership and increasing passenger demand, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has unveiled a significant expansion of its operating hours. Effective from February 15, 2026, metro train services will now run until 11 PM, marking a notable enhancement to the city's public transport network.
Extended Night Services to Boost Commuter Convenience
Currently, the last departures from both Aluva Metro station and Tripunithura Terminal Metro station occur at 10:30 PM. Under the new schedule, these final services will be pushed back to 11 PM, providing an additional half-hour of connectivity for late-night travelers. This move is strategically designed to accommodate the growing number of passengers who rely on the metro for evening commutes, shopping, and leisure activities.
Growing Calls for Earlier Morning Operations
Alongside the night extension, there is a rising chorus of demands for earlier morning metro services. Commuters and residents argue that starting operations at 5 AM would greatly benefit those heading to Ernakulam Junction and Town railway stations, where several long-distance trains depart early in the day.
"With the decline in private bus services across the city, Kochi Metro should initiate operations at 5 AM to facilitate seamless travel for early-morning commuters," emphasized V C Jayendran, secretary of the Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Association (TRURA). Presently, weekday services commence at 6 AM, while Sunday operations start at 7:30 AM.
Special Festival Services for Shivaratri
In a demonstration of its commitment to passenger convenience, KMRL has also announced special metro services for the upcoming Shivaratri festival. On Sunday, the last service from Tripunithura Terminal will depart at 11:30 PM, extending beyond the regular schedule. Additionally, services will begin early from Aluva Metro station at 4 AM on Monday, operating until 6 AM with trains running at a frequency of 30 minutes. After this period, normal service schedules will resume.
KMRL's Pledge to Safe and Reliable Transport
A spokesperson for Kochi Metro reiterated the organization's dedication to providing safe, reliable, and passenger-friendly services, especially during major festivals and public events. "KMRL remains steadfast in its mission to enhance urban mobility and support the community through adaptable and efficient transport solutions," the spokesperson stated.
This dual focus on extending night hours and addressing early-morning needs underscores KMRL's proactive approach to meeting evolving commuter demands, positioning the Kochi Metro as a pivotal component of the city's infrastructure and daily life.
