Mizoram's Digital Divide: 54 Villages Remain Without Mobile or Internet Signals
In a revealing statement to the state assembly on Thursday, Mizoram's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister, Vanlalthlana, disclosed that 54 villages across the state currently lack mobile or internet signals. This information, based on data from the Department of Telecommunications, highlights a significant connectivity gap in the northeastern region.
Uninhabited Villages and Connectivity Challenges
Responding to a query from Mizo National Front legislator Prova Chakma, Minister Vanlalthlana elaborated that out of the 54 affected villages, 21 are now uninhabited. This detail underscores the complex interplay between population shifts and infrastructure development in remote areas.
BSNL is actively working to address this issue through the 4G saturation project, with plans to erect mobile towers in 14 of these villages. This initiative is part of broader efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure equitable access to telecommunications services.
Central Government's Nationwide Connectivity Plan
During supplementary questioning, Vanlalthlana emphasized that the central government has undertaken a comprehensive plan to ensure all villages across India have mobile and internet connectivity by 2029. BSNL is diligently working in Mizoram to meet this ambitious deadline, aligning state-level actions with national objectives.
In a move to enhance digital inclusion, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bashini app. This agreement aims to include the Mizo language in the app, which is developed by the central government, thereby promoting linguistic diversity in digital platforms.
Chief Minister's Commitment to Digital Transformation
Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed a firm commitment to ensuring internet and mobile signals reach all uncovered villages. He highlighted that work in "villages of strategic importance, such as those in border areas," will be expedited "on security reasons." This prioritization reflects the dual focus on both developmental and security imperatives.
Lalduhoma further stated that Mizoram has been taking concerted steps to become the first digital state in the country, showcasing the state's proactive approach to technological advancement.
Mizoram's Leading Telecom Indicators in the Northeast
On Tuesday, Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh informed the assembly that Mizoram leads the northeast in telecom indicators. The state boasts a tele-density of 112.10, with rural areas at 93.88 and urban areas at 126.77. Additionally, 42.28% of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) are connected via fibre, and the tower density stands at 1.07 per 1,000 population.
The governor detailed that a 4G saturation project is underway in 53 villages and aspirational districts to cover uncovered areas. Furthermore, the amended BharatNet programme will connect all 771 Gram Panchayats by upgrading existing sites and creating new ones in a ring topology using optical fibre. This infrastructure push is critical for enhancing connectivity and supporting Mizoram's digital aspirations.
