Karnataka Minister U T Khader on Wednesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh for the families affected by the Nagori wall collapse in Mangaluru. The minister also urged residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.
Details of the Incident
The wall collapse occurred in the Nagori locality of Mangaluru, resulting in damage to property and leaving several families displaced. According to local officials, the incident took place late Tuesday night following heavy rainfall in the region. No casualties were reported, but the collapse has raised concerns about the structural safety of old buildings and retaining walls in the area.
Government Response and Ex Gratia
Speaking to reporters after visiting the site, U T Khader, who holds the portfolio of Housing and Minority Welfare, said that the government would release Rs 1.5 lakh from the district disaster relief fund to undertake immediate repair works. “The amount will be used to clear debris and restore normalcy in the affected area. We are also assessing the damage to provide further assistance if needed,” Khader stated.
The minister directed the Mangaluru City Corporation to conduct a structural audit of similar vulnerable walls and buildings in the locality. He emphasized that preventive measures must be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.
Caution for Vulnerable Areas
Khader urged residents living near steep slopes, old structures, and retaining walls to remain vigilant. “With heavy rains predicted in the coming days, people should report any signs of instability to the local authorities immediately. We cannot risk lives,” he said.
The district administration has been asked to identify and cordon off high-risk zones. A helpline number has also been issued for residents to report emergencies.
Community Impact and Next Steps
Local residents expressed relief that no lives were lost but demanded long-term solutions. “This is not the first such incident. We need proper drainage and reinforcement of walls,” said a resident. The minister assured that the government would expedite repair works and consider permanent measures, including the relocation of families if necessary.
