Karnataka Minister U T Khader on Wednesday distributed compensation cheques of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those who died in the Nagori wall collapse incident. The minister also announced that Rs 1.5 lakh would be released to undertake repair works in the affected area.
Compensation and Relief Measures
Speaking to the media after handing over the cheques, Khader expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of all possible support from the government. He said the district administration has been instructed to expedite the release of funds for repair works.
“We have provided Rs 5 lakh compensation to each victim’s family as per government norms. Additionally, Rs 1.5 lakh will be released for necessary repairs to prevent further incidents,” Khader said.
Call for Caution in Vulnerable Areas
The minister urged residents living in vulnerable areas, especially those near old structures and retaining walls, to remain vigilant. He advised people to report any signs of instability to local authorities immediately.
“I appeal to everyone to be cautious during the monsoon season. If you notice any cracks or weakening of walls, please inform the municipal corporation or the nearest government office,” Khader added.
Background of the Incident
The wall collapse occurred in the Nagori area of Mangaluru on Monday, killing several people and injuring others. The wall, believed to be old and weakened by recent rains, gave way suddenly, trapping victims under debris. Rescue operations were carried out by local police, fire brigade, and disaster response teams.
According to officials, the collapsed wall was part of a private property and had been standing for decades. The exact cause of the collapse is under investigation, with experts examining whether structural weakness or water seepage was responsible.
Government Response and Future Steps
The Karnataka government has directed the district administration to conduct a safety audit of all old walls and buildings in Mangaluru, especially those in densely populated areas. Municipal authorities have been asked to identify high-risk structures and take preventive action.
Khader said the government is committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and will take strict action against property owners who neglect maintenance. “We cannot allow such tragedies to repeat. Owners of old structures must ensure they are safe, or face legal consequences,” he warned.
The minister also announced that the injured are being treated at government hospitals at no cost, and their families will receive additional financial assistance as per medical requirements.
