Nagpur Playground in Anandnagar Faces Severe Neglect, Sparks Resident Outrage
A public playground located in North Nagpur's Anandnagar area has become a glaring symbol of civic neglect, igniting widespread anger among local residents. The ground, which was originally equipped with a green gym, a public well, open play areas, and washrooms, has fallen into a state of disrepair over the years, transforming from a safe recreational space into a site of misuse and deterioration.
Deterioration of Recreational Facilities
What was intended as a safe haven for children and families to enjoy outdoor activities is now frequently used for grazing livestock. Residents have raised serious allegations that after dark, the area becomes a hub for gambling and alcohol consumption, further compromising community safety. The green gym, installed approximately six years ago, is in a particularly poor condition, with most equipment broken, rusted, or completely missing.
Resident Shahnawaz Sheikh expressed his frustration, stating, "It was widely used initially, but the lack of maintenance rendered it unusable. The washrooms are also in a deplorable condition, adding to the overall neglect."
Sanitation and Infrastructure Issues
The nearly 40-year-old public well on the premises has deteriorated significantly, now filled with contaminated water, moss, and accumulated garbage. Sanitation efforts remain erratic, leading to waste piling up across the playground, creating an unsanitary and hazardous environment. This neglect has rendered the ground unfit for sports and daily recreational use, depriving the community of a vital public space.
Another resident, Dheeraj Sahare, emphasized the urgency, saying, "The area needs immediate restoration and regular upkeep. Children have no safe space to play, which is a major concern for families here."
Political Response and Proposed Actions
In response to the growing outcry, local political representatives have begun to address the issue. Congress corporator Rama Uikey reported that a JCB machine was recently deployed to clear waste from the site, marking a preliminary step towards cleanup. Meanwhile, BJP corporator Abhiruchi Rajgire announced plans to inspect the area with her team and initiate a formal proposal for necessary repairs to be presented before the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The situation highlights broader challenges in urban maintenance and public space management, with residents calling for sustained efforts to restore the playground to its intended purpose as a community asset.
