Nagpur Authorities Remove Hazardous Gulmohar Trees from Besa-Pipla Road After Series of Accidents
In a decisive move to enhance road safety, authorities in Nagpur removed two Gulmohar trees that were standing in the middle of the busy Besa-Pipla main road on Tuesday night. This action comes after months of intense debate and several reported accidents at the location, bringing significant relief to daily commuters and motorists who had long expressed concerns about the hazards posed by the trees.
Background of Accidents and Public Pressure
Over the past few months, multiple mishaps had been documented at this spot, with the most recent accident occurring on Monday night. This incident renewed urgent calls from the public for the removal of the trees, highlighting the growing frustration over the risks to traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Despite the clear dangers, authorities had previously hesitated to take action due to strong objections from environmental activists, who advocated for preserving the trees through alternative measures.
Official Procedures and Compensatory Measures
A senior Public Works Department (PWD) official explained that all mandatory procedures were meticulously followed before the trees were cut. "We identify and mark trees based on their location and whether they fall within the road alignment. A public notice is issued, and objections, if any, are considered. Only after discussions and due approvals do we proceed," the official stated. He emphasized that compensatory plantation will be undertaken in accordance with established norms, noting that the ratio generally depends on the size and type of tree. In this specific case, authorities have committed to planting 14 trees as compensation. Once the road work is fully completed, fresh plantation along the stretch will be initiated, either through the PWD or the Nagar Panchayat, which is expected to benefit pedestrians as well.
Mixed Reactions from Local Residents
The removal of the trees has elicited mixed reactions from the community. N Cherian, a resident of Pipla, expressed disappointment, suggesting that the trees could have been preserved through better barricading. "Instead of cutting the trees, authorities could have barricaded them properly. Now, compensatory plantation must be ensured," he remarked. On the other hand, Dinesh Sonawane, a local shopkeeper, welcomed the decision, highlighting the immediate improvements in traffic conditions. "There is much more space now, and movement has become smoother," he said, reflecting the relief felt by many motorists.
Authority Statements and Future Plans
Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat chief officer Bharat Nandanwar provided further insight into the process, stating, "Earlier, some activists had raised objections when the road construction began. Over the past few months, we completed all necessary procedures and documentation before finally removing the trees." Officials also noted that certain tree species, such as banyan and peepal, require additional consideration due to their ecological and cultural significance, but in this instance, the focus was on addressing immediate safety concerns.
