Nagpur Railway Station's Underground Parking Facility Nears Full Operation
In a significant development for commuters, the underground parking facility at the main entrance of Nagpur Railway Station is expected to become fully operational before the onset of the monsoon season. This marks a crucial milestone in the ongoing comprehensive modernisation of one of central India's busiest railway hubs.
Construction Progress and Current Status
Officials have confirmed that the upgradation works have entered a critical phase, with civil construction largely completed and flooring finished across most sections of the underground parking area. The facility has already been opened for limited use, including staff parking and regulated pick-and-drop services, which has helped streamline vehicular access and reduce congestion at the station's entrance.
Installation of lifts and other essential passenger amenities is currently in the final stage of completion. Once fully operational, this underground parking is projected to significantly improve access and commuter convenience, aligning with broader efforts to upgrade transport infrastructure across the region.
Broader Station Redevelopment Project
The underground parking facility is part of a larger station redevelopment project that encompasses multiple aspects of infrastructure improvement. According to officials, the overall project is now nearing 70% completion. Key components include:
- Platform upgrades and enhancements
- Improved circulation systems for better passenger flow
- Infrastructure augmentation throughout the station complex
Work on the station's forecourt, which was previously marked by extensive excavation and uneven surfaces, has also been largely completed, creating a more accessible and user-friendly environment for passengers.
Temporary Passenger Facility Reorganization
During the renovation period, passenger facilities have been temporarily reorganized to ensure minimal disruption to services. An air-conditioned waiting hall is now fully functional and operational in a newly constructed administrative building located near Ram Jhula. This temporary arrangement will continue until renovation work at the original waiting area is complete.
"Once the refurbishment is complete, passengers will be moved back to the original waiting area," confirmed an official involved in the project. "The new administrative building will eventually house multiple railway offices after the transition."
Seasonal Measures for Passenger Comfort
In response to the summer heat, railway authorities have announced that sprinklers on platforms will resume operation starting this Saturday. This seasonal measure is designed to provide much-needed relief to passengers during the hot summer months, demonstrating the administration's attention to passenger comfort alongside infrastructure improvements.
Enhanced Rail Connectivity
In related railway news, Southern Railways has announced the introduction of Kanpur-SMVT Bengaluru special trains that will include a halt at Nagpur Railway Station. The service details are as follows:
- Train 04131 will operate on Sundays from April 5 to May 24, reaching Nagpur at 3:50 PM.
- The return train 04132 will run on Wednesdays from April 8 to May 27, arriving at Nagpur at 7:30 AM.
These special trains will feature AC, sleeper, and general coaches, significantly boosting connectivity for Vidarbha region passengers traveling between southern and northern destinations. The additional service represents another step toward enhancing Nagpur's position as a crucial transportation hub in central India.
