NDMC Ramps Up Mechanized Sanitation Drive with New Fleet Deployment
In a major push to advance its flagship 'broom-free city' initiative, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has significantly expanded its arsenal of mechanized cleaning equipment across its jurisdiction. The move aims to transition towards fully mechanized sanitation operations, reducing reliance on manual labor while enhancing efficiency and environmental sustainability.
New Battery-Operated Machines for High-Footfall Areas
On Friday, NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra officially flagged off twenty new battery-operated litter-picking machines, commonly referred to as gobblers. These machines are specifically designed to strengthen cleaning operations in bustling markets and other areas with heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the NDMC zone.
"This deployment marks a crucial advancement in modernizing urban sanitation infrastructure," stated Chairman Chandra. "By embracing technology-driven solutions, we are not only improving operational efficiency but also prioritizing worker safety and promoting sustainable practices. These low-noise, eco-friendly machines will ensure more effective cleaning of our public spaces."
Comprehensive Mechanized Fleet for Diverse Cleaning Needs
The NDMC's mechanization strategy extends far beyond the new litter pickers. The civic body has implemented a multi-faceted approach utilizing various specialized equipment:
- Electric E-Carts: Deployed for segregated waste collection from major public hubs including Connaught Place, Khan Market, and Sarojini Nagar.
- Wet-Mopping Trolleys: Twenty-seven units are now operational for daily wet cleaning of market areas.
- Mechanized Road-Sweeping (MRS) Machines: A fleet of seven MRS machines cleans major arterial roads, covering approximately 350-400 kilometers daily.
- Support Equipment: The council utilizes leaf blowers for dry leaf collection and high-pressure jetting machines for dust suppression, with litter pickers handling final sweeping operations.
Targeted Cleaning Operations Across Different Zones
Officials detailed a rotational deployment system for deep cleaning. Ten high-pressure jetting machines are used every fifteen days to thoroughly clean markets, corridors, plazas, footpaths, and kerbside areas, effectively suppressing dust.
For narrower lanes and residential colonies where larger machinery cannot access, NDMC has deployed twenty-nine pushback or manual sweepers. Additionally, the council has introduced four ride-on sweepers and four scrubbers specifically for mechanized cleaning of footpaths in pedestrian-heavy zones.
Integrated Approach for Sustainable Urban Sanitation
Chairman Keshav Chandra emphasized that this integrated mechanization strategy ensures better sequencing of cleaning activities, optimal use of resources, and sustained improvements in cleanliness standards across all NDMC areas.
"Our comprehensive approach is designed to set new benchmarks in urban sanitation," Chandra explained. "By systematically deploying the right equipment for each specific cleaning challenge, we are building a more efficient, safer, and cleaner urban environment for all residents and visitors."
The expansion of NDMC's mechanized fleet represents a significant step forward in the city's ongoing efforts to modernize public sanitation infrastructure through innovative technological solutions.
