NDMC Launches Ambitious 25-Year Water Supply Master Plan for Lutyens' Delhi

In a significant move toward achieving round-the-clock water supply in the prestigious Lutyens' Delhi area, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has officially commenced the process of appointing a specialized consultant. This consultant will be tasked with preparing a comprehensive 25-year water supply master plan, marking a major infrastructure overhaul for the capital's administrative heart.

Comprehensive Study and Infrastructure Assessment

The appointed consultant will conduct an extensive study of the entire NDMC area, meticulously assessing current leakage points and identifying shortcomings within the existing pipeline network. This will involve a thorough examination of the condition of all water infrastructure, from distribution lines to storage facilities. Based on this assessment, the consultant will prepare detailed, zone-wise networking plans that will serve as the blueprint for future improvements.

"These master plans are designed to be dynamic documents," explained an NDMC official. "They will be systematically revisited and updated every five years to incorporate technological advancements, address emerging challenges, and integrate continuous improvements based on performance data and resident feedback."

Phased Implementation and Tender Process

The council has already invited tenders for the consultancy role, with more than ten agencies having expressed preliminary interest. "We are currently addressing various technical and procedural issues raised during the pre-bid meeting with potential consultants," the official added. "The entire selection process is expected to be finalized within the next 21 days."

Following the consultant's proposals and final master plan, the NDMC will hire an expert execution agency to implement the plan in a carefully structured, phased manner. This systematic approach is designed to minimize disruption while maximizing efficiency.

Transforming Water Supply: From Tanks to Pressurized Lines

A cornerstone of the new system is the eventual elimination of overhead water tanks throughout the NDMC area. Currently, residents receive potable water during specific morning and evening slots, which they must store in these tanks for daily use.

Under the proposed master plan, supply lines will maintain continuous pressure throughout the day and night. This shift to a 24x7 pressurized supply means residents will no longer need to store water, ensuring direct, on-demand access.

Another official detailed the monitoring mechanism: "The system will include smart monitoring. If water motors are detected operating continuously on a supply line, or if the water volume supplied spikes significantly compared to previous days, it will automatically trigger an immediate verification alert for possible leakages."

Substantial Water Conservation Expected

Officials estimate that fixing the identified leakages and modernizing the network could lead to substantial water conservation. Preliminary projections suggest that 30 to 40 percent of water currently lost could be saved, representing a critical gain for urban water management in the capital.

This 25-year master plan represents a long-term commitment to upgrading Delhi's core civic infrastructure, aiming to provide reliable, efficient, and sustainable water supply to one of its most important zones.
