Nehru Place Multi-Level Car Parking Facility Inaugurated in Delhi
The much-anticipated multi-level car parking facility at Nehru Place in New Delhi officially opened to the public on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards alleviating traffic congestion in one of the city's busiest commercial districts. The inauguration ceremony on Monday was attended by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who highlighted the project's role in revitalizing Nehru Place, recognized as one of Asia's largest IT and commercial hubs with an average daily footfall exceeding 130,000 visitors.
Project Details and Infrastructure
Developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the Urban Development Fund of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, this six-level structure, including a basement, covers an area of 29,664 square metres and was constructed at a cost of Rs 62.4 crore. Conceived during the 2021-22 period, the project addresses long-standing parking shortages in the area, which is densely populated with offices, IT outlets, restaurants, and retail establishments.
The 24x7 facility can accommodate approximately 660 cars, with 56 spaces reserved for persons with disabilities, and 352 two-wheelers. It is equipped with power backup and nine subsidised electric vehicle charging stations, promoting sustainable urban mobility.
Advanced Features and Sustainability Measures
Featuring automated ticketing, digital parking guidance displays, LED lighting, firefighting systems, CCTV surveillance, and lifts, the complex also includes dedicated pedestrian pathways and ramps to ensure barrier-free access. Lieutenant Governor Saxena emphasized that the facility will help eliminate unauthorised parking, stating, "The facility reflects our commitment to organised, accessible and sustainable urban infrastructure. Our policy is one of zero tolerance towards unauthorised parking. I urge citizens to use this modern facility and support our vision of a greener and smarter Delhi."
South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri praised the initiative on social media, calling it a boon for local residents. An official noted that Nehru Place has long struggled with haphazard parking spilling onto roads and footpaths, leading to severe congestion. "With vehicles parking for an average of eight hours, we expect at least 3,000 vehicles to use the facility daily. Payment options will include FasTAG, to be added within a week, alongside online methods," the official said, adding that a concessionaire will operate and maintain the complex for two years.
Structural Design and Environmental Initiatives
Built as a reinforced cement concrete structure, the complex is designed to withstand seismic conditions specific to Delhi. It utilizes lightweight autoclaved aerated concrete blocks instead of conventional bricks, with shear walls providing additional stability. The vacuum dewatered concrete technology enhances surface durability and minimizes cracking, making it suitable for heavy vehicular movement with reduced maintenance needs.
Sustainability is a key focus, with measures such as tree transplantation and compensatory plantation. A vertical garden covering approximately 400 square metres will be developed on an exterior wall, and two rainwater harvesting systems have been installed to promote water conservation and prevent waterlogging.
Layout and Intelligent Systems
The spacious layout facilitates smooth parking and manoeuvring, while intelligent parking management and guidance systems help users locate vacant spaces on every floor. Additional features include mechanical ventilation with air-quality monitoring, energy-efficient lighting, and a facade with GRC jali work to maximize natural daylight and reduce power consumption.
This project represents a major advancement in Delhi's urban infrastructure, aiming to transform Nehru Place into a more organized and sustainable commercial hub.
