On Sunday, occupants of two vehicles—an i10 and a Swift Dzire—had a narrow escape after they got stuck in deep potholes on the Patti-Tarn Taran road near Shahabpur. The incident highlights the long-standing neglect of this crucial stretch in Punjab, which has seen repeated mishaps but little action from authorities.
Narrow Escape for Motorists
Nishan Singh, driver of the Swift Dzire, said he was heading to Patti when his car hit a pothole near Shahabpur and he lost control. “The pothole was so deep that the car got stuck. It was a terrifying experience,” he said, noting that such hazards are common on this road. Manjit Singh, driving an i10, also reported losing control while traveling from Amritsar to Kandiala (Patti) due to a large road pit. Both drivers escaped without injury, but the incident has reignited concerns over road safety.
Calls for Immediate Action
Kirti Kisan Union leader Nachhattar Singh Pannu criticized officials for failing to address the deteriorating road. “Despite multiple accidents, the road has not been repaired. Two-wheeler riders avoid taking this stretch altogether. We have no idea when the authorities will finally act and carry out permanent repairs,” he stated. Pannu added that the road has been in bad shape for years, with potholes becoming deeper during the monsoon season, posing serious risks to commuters.
Officials Respond
SDM Karanvir Singh acknowledged the issue, stating that a survey of the road had been completed and work had commenced. However, residents remain skeptical, citing a history of temporary fixes that quickly deteriorate. The Patti-Tarn Taran road is a vital link for several villages and towns, and its poor condition has led to traffic chaos and frequent breakdowns.
The incident on Sunday serves as yet another warning. With the monsoon intensifying, potholes are expected to worsen, increasing the likelihood of more accidents. Local leaders are urging the state government to allocate funds for a comprehensive overhaul, including resurfacing and drainage improvements, to ensure long-term safety.
