PCMC Seeks New Contractor for Delayed Bhama Askhed Water Pipeline Project in Pune
PCMC Invites Bids for Bhama Askhed Water Pipeline After Terminating Contract

PCMC Launches Fresh Bidding for Critical Bhama Askhed Water Pipeline Project

In a decisive move to revive a stalled infrastructure initiative, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has officially invited bids to appoint a new agency for the Bhama Askhed water pipeline project. This action comes over a month after the civic body terminated its contract with the previous contractor due to persistent and unacceptable delays.

New Timeline and Urgent Push for Completion

Civic officials have confirmed that the tendering process is now actively underway. A fresh and strict deadline of 10 months has been established, with the ambitious goal of completing this vital project by next year. The decision to change contractors follows significant public and administrative criticism directed at the PCMC for granting multiple extensions to the previous firm, despite witnessing stagnant and minimal progress on the ground.

A senior official from the PCMC's water supply department emphasized the administration's commitment to fast-tracking the new appointment. "We are working diligently to expedite the appointment process so that ground work can resume immediately. Our aim is to restart construction at the earliest. With the monsoon season approaching in June, we are prioritizing this process to avoid any further setbacks," the official stated.

Project Status and Critical Importance for Pune

The Bhama Askhed pipeline project is being executed in two distinct phases and is already in an advanced stage of development. According to the latest assessments:

  • Approximately 60% of the 1,400 mm diameter pipeline has been successfully laid.
  • Nearly 70% of the larger 1,700 mm diameter pipeline is complete.

This project is of paramount importance for the water security of the twin cities under PCMC's jurisdiction. Once fully operational, the pipeline is designed to supply an additional 167 million litres per day (MLD) of water. This substantial increase has the potential to completely end the current alternate-day water supply schedule that many residents are forced to endure. Officials have indicated that a transition to a more regular, daily water supply would be seriously considered and implemented once the project is successfully commissioned and functional.

Background of Delays and Contract Termination

The project's history is marked by repeated delays. It was originally awarded to a contractor in August 2020, with an initial completion deadline set for December 2024. However, after the contractor consistently failed to meet performance benchmarks, the PCMC granted revised deadlines, first extending to December 2025 and then to March 2026. When these revised timelines were also not met, the municipal corporation officially initiated termination proceedings against the contractor last month, leading to the current search for a new, reliable agency to finish the crucial remaining work.
