Pune Metro Gears Up for Major Expansion with New Line and Enhanced Services
In preparation for the imminent launch of the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro line, Maha Metro is actively exploring significant upgrades to its existing operations. The focus is on enhancing commuter experience through longer trains and more frequent services to accommodate the anticipated surge in ridership.
Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Line Nears Completion
The construction of the 23-kilometer Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro line has progressed to its final stages. Authorities expect approximately 13 stations along this route to be operational within the next two months. This new line will seamlessly integrate with the two existing Metro lines at the Civil Court station, creating a more connected urban transit network.
Anticipated Ridership Increase and Strategic Planning
Once fully functional, the Hinjewadi line is projected to boost daily commuter footfall by an impressive 90,000 to 100,000 passengers. In response, Maha Metro has initiated a comprehensive study to evaluate increasing train frequency and converting current three-coach rakes into six-compartment rakes. This strategic move aims to efficiently manage the expected rise in passenger volume.
Maha Metro's managing director, Shravan Hardikar, emphasized the collaborative efforts with PMRDA, stating, "Both Maha Metro and PMRDA are working jointly on various platforms to provide a seamless travel experience to commuters."
Current Operations and Proposed Enhancements
Presently, Maha Metro operates trains on two primary routes: from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate and from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Services run daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, with trains arriving every seven minutes during peak hours and every ten minutes during non-peak periods. The proposed enhancements seek to optimize these schedules further to reduce wait times and increase capacity.
Integration Efforts for Seamless Travel
A key component of the expansion plan involves integrating the ticketing systems across all Metro lines. Authorities are developing a common ticketing application and QR code system to allow commuters to switch between the existing lines and the new Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi line without any inconvenience. This initiative is designed to streamline the passenger journey and enhance overall user satisfaction.
Infrastructure Developments at Key Stations
To facilitate smooth transfers, infrastructure projects are underway at critical integration points. At Civil Court station, construction has begun on a foot overbridge that will connect directly to the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line, with completion expected within two months. Additionally, at Shivajinagar (Shimla Office Chowk), Maha Metro has already constructed a ticket counter and an underpass, enabling commuters to move effortlessly between different Metro lines.
These developments underscore Maha Metro's commitment to advancing Pune's public transportation infrastructure, ensuring it meets the growing demands of the city's residents and commuters.
