Former Lahaul-Spiti MLA and BJP state executive member Ravi Thakur has sparked a controversy by alleging that funds allocated for wildlife conservation are being diverted to the Shinkula Tunnel project in Himachal Pradesh. The tunnel, which aims to improve connectivity in the region, has become a focal point of debate over financial priorities.
Allegations of Fund Diversion
Thakur claimed that the state government is using money from the wildlife budget to finance the tunnel, potentially violating norms set by the National Board for Wildlife. He stated, "The government must clarify how wildlife funds are being spent on a road infrastructure project. This is a serious misuse of public money meant for conservation."
Project Details and Impact
The Shinkula Tunnel, once completed, will provide all-weather connectivity to the remote Lahaul-Spiti region, reducing travel time to Leh. However, environmentalists warn that the tunnel could disrupt local ecosystems, including habitats of the snow leopard and other endangered species. The project's cost has escalated to over ₹1,500 crore, with wildlife funds allegedly contributing a portion.
Government Response
Officials from the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department have denied the allegations, stating that all funds are used as per approved budgets. A spokesperson said, "The tunnel project has separate financial allocations, and no wildlife funds have been diverted. The claims are baseless." However, Thakur has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter.
