Coimbatore: Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu on Saturday issued a stern warning to contractors, stating that strict action would be taken if substandard food is supplied to government hostels. The minister conducted an inspection of the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Girls’ Hostel in Nesavalar Colony here as part of a broader inspection drive across social justice department hostels in the district, prompted by complaints regarding poor food quality.
Inspection and Student Interaction
During the visit, Minister Vanni Arasu personally examined the food served to students and engaged with inmates to hear their grievances directly. He checked the quality and hygiene of the meals provided, ensuring that the hostel's facilities met the required standards.
Student Demands Addressed
Addressing reporters later, Vanni Arasu stated that students had raised several issues during the interaction. Among the key demands were the provision of bus facilities from the hostel to ease commuting and the removal of a liquor shop located in close proximity to the hostel premises. The minister assured that officials have been instructed to act promptly on these requests.
Strengthened Monitoring Mechanisms
Stressing the government's commitment to student welfare, the minister emphasized that monitoring mechanisms would be strengthened to improve standards across all hostels. He announced that surprise inspections could be conducted at any time, and students' contact numbers have been collected to enable direct communication with authorities. This will allow students to report issues without any hindrance.
Zero Tolerance for Lapses
Vanni Arasu asserted that action would be initiated even on the basis of complaints received via text messages. He made it clear that there would be no leniency for those responsible for any lapses, whether contractors or officials. The minister's warning underscores the government's determination to ensure quality services in welfare hostels.
