Trichy Corporation Initiates Culvert Replacement on Heber Road to Address Seepage Problems

The Trichy Corporation has taken decisive action to tackle persistent drainage issues on a key city road. On Thursday, authorities partially closed Heber Road near the Cantonment police station to facilitate the replacement of a faulty culvert that has been causing frequent seepage on this busy stretch. This move comes in response to ongoing concerns about water management and public safety in the area.

Background of the Drainage Issue

Officials explained that the existing culvert plays a critical role in the local drainage system. It is designed to carry wastewater and surplus rainwater from Bharathidasan Road towards the district court and further onward to the MGR statue junction. However, during the recent monsoon season, the infrastructure proved inadequate to handle the increased flow.

Excess rainwater from several prominent locations, including the Trichy Corporation office, the All India Radio office, and Reynolds Road, converged towards Heber Road, which is a low-lying zone. This overwhelming volume led to seepage being reported near the Parangiri Velu public park, close to the district court, highlighting the urgent need for an upgrade.

Project Details and Funding

To address this problem, the corporation has sanctioned a budget of ₹6 lakh for the construction of a new culvert across the 40-foot-wide road. A corporation official stated, "Half of the carriageway has been closed to execute the work in phases. We plan to complete it within three days." This phased approach aims to minimize disruption while ensuring the project is completed efficiently.

Traffic Restrictions and Impact

Until the work is finished, significant traffic restrictions are in place. Vehicles traveling towards Bharathidasan Road and Reynolds Road from Heber Road are now restricted. Additionally, vehicles are not permitted a free right turn towards the MGR roundabout from Heber Road. These measures are expected to remain until the culvert replacement is fully completed, with authorities urging commuters to plan alternate routes to avoid delays.

The initiative underscores the Trichy Corporation's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and addressing public concerns related to monsoon-related challenges. Residents and daily commuters are advised to stay updated on the progress and adhere to the temporary traffic regulations for a smoother transition during this essential repair work.
