Uttarakhand Accelerates Parking Infrastructure to Combat Urban Congestion
In a significant move to alleviate traffic congestion and parking challenges, the Uttarakhand government is actively developing 11 new parking facilities across the state. These projects boast a combined capacity to accommodate 1,082 vehicles, with approximately 80% of the construction work already completed. Authorities anticipate finalizing the remaining construction within the next six months, aiming for full operational status before the peak travel season.
Strategic Review and Phased Implementation
The initiative stems from an extensive review conducted in 2024, where proposals were solicited for parking solutions at 195 locations through various development authorities. Options under consideration included surface parking, multi-level structures, and innovative tunnel-based facilities, with priority given to high-traffic tourist destinations such as Nainital and Dehradun.
Following evaluation, the housing department approved detailed project reports (DPRs) for parking at 114 locations and allocated the necessary budgets. The implementation has been structured into phases:
- First Phase: Successfully developed parking facilities with a capacity for 3,244 vehicles at 54 locations, which are now operational.
- Second Phase: Currently underway at 11 additional locations, focusing on creating space for 1,082 vehicles, with a target completion within the current financial year.
Additionally, development authorities are independently constructing parking facilities at 11 more locations, utilizing their own resources. These projects are expected to collectively provide parking for 359 vehicles, further bolstering the state's infrastructure.
Government Directives and Future Plans
Housing Secretary R Rajesh Kumar has issued directives to development authorities to expedite construction efforts. Emphasis has been placed on ensuring that all parking sites become operational ahead of the upcoming travel season. Basic amenities, including toilets, adequate lighting, and cleanliness arrangements, are also being prioritized to enhance user experience.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the growing influx of pilgrims and tourists to Uttarakhand, noting that improved road connectivity has led to an increase in private vehicle usage, exacerbating congestion in urban areas. Over the past four years, the state has undertaken concerted efforts to strengthen parking infrastructure at key locations to meet this rising demand.
This comprehensive approach underscores Uttarakhand's commitment to sustainable urban development and improved mobility for residents and visitors alike.
