Pedestrians in Vazhuthacaud are facing significant challenges when attempting to cross a key junction on C V Raman Pillai Road, despite the installation of zebra crossings and reflective stop lines as part of a smart city road revamp initiative. The newly laid road markings at the Cotton Hill Road - C V Raman Pillai Road intersection are generating widespread confusion among motorists, resulting in vehicles frequently stopping on the pedestrian crossings and obstructing safe passage.
Confusing Dual Stop Lines Hinder Crossing Efforts
The core of the issue lies in the placement of two stop lines on the Vazhuthacaud - Vellayambalam direction of the road: one positioned before the zebra crossing and another after it. This unconventional setup causes many vehicles to halt directly on the zebra line when traffic signals turn red, while others stop at the preceding stop line. Consequently, pedestrians crossing from the forest office side towards Cotton Hill Road endure considerable difficulty, especially during peak traffic hours.
According to the standard design guidelines of the Indian Road Congress, stop lines should always precede zebra crossing lines to ensure vehicles do not encroach upon pedestrian spaces. However, the current arrangement at this junction deviates from this norm, leading to unintended obstructions.
Lack of Enforcement and Uniformity Exacerbates Risks
Since motorists are not technically violating stop lines by stopping on the zebra crossing, they avoid penalties, leaving pedestrians vulnerable. Compounding the problem is the absence of traffic police to regulate flow or document violations. "Many people cross the road at this point because there are numerous shops and tea stalls on the forest office side of the main road. But the pedestrian line is not drawn considering the actual traffic flow," noted George Thomas, a local resident.
Adding to the confusion is a lack of uniformity in road markings across adjacent junctions. For instance, at the nearby intersection where All India Radio Road meets C V Raman Pillai Road, the zebra crossing is correctly painted after the stop line, adhering to proper design standards. This inconsistency creates unnecessary hassle and safety risks for all road users.
Pedestrians Face Dual Threats at Busy Junction
Those who manage to navigate across the zebra crossing despite obstructing vehicles then confront another hazard: free-flowing incoming traffic from Cotton Hill Road onto C V Raman Pillai Road. This dual threat makes the crossing particularly perilous, undermining the smart city project's goals of enhanced safety and efficiency.
The situation highlights a critical need for review and realignment of the road markings to comply with established traffic design principles, ensuring pedestrian safety is prioritized in urban development efforts.
