Vijayawada Civic Body Installs Mirrors to Curb Open Urination
Vijayawada Mirrors Tackle Open Urination

In an unconventional approach to address open urination in public spaces, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has installed mirrors at four key locations across the city. The idea is that seeing one's own reflection will promote better civic behavior.

This initiative, inspired by similar efforts in cities like Mysuru, is part of VMC's ongoing "Operation Clean Sweep" program aimed at improving sanitation in public areas. Mirrors have been placed at Benz Circle, Vijayawada Government General Hospital (GGH), the Apsara Theatre area, and another busy zone near Sambamurthi road.

According to VMC assistant engineer V Chandrasekhar, these spots were chosen based on field observations and feedback from sanitation staff. High-traffic areas, street corners, and other vulnerable locations with frequent reports of open urination were prioritized. "Public urination remains a challenge despite available public toilets. The goal is to raise awareness, increase attentiveness, and drive behavioral change," he said.

So far, around 10 mirrors have been installed near Benz Circle and about 15 near GGH, with more installations planned in the coming months. Officials noted that mirrors are also placed near public toilets to encourage their use instead of open urination.

The engineering department executed the project at an estimated cost of ₹6 lakh. Instead of conventional glass, durable acrylic reflective sheets are used to reduce breakage and vandalism risks. Sanitary inspectors will handle maintenance.

Officials emphasized that the initiative is a behavioral nudge, not a punitive measure. Although no formal complaints were received from the public, sanitation workers repeatedly raised the issue and urged effective solutions.

VMC currently operates free public toilets, standalone facilities, and community toilet complexes across the city. Encouraged by the initial response, the corporation is identifying more locations for similar interventions to enhance public hygiene and cleanliness.
