Vijayawada's Infrared 'Road Doctor' Machine for Pothole Repairs

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Launches Advanced Infrared Road Repair Machine

The engineering wing of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has taken a significant step forward in urban infrastructure management by inducting a state-of-the-art Infrared Recycling Pothole and Road Repair Mobile Machine. This initiative aims to strengthen road maintenance operations, ensuring quicker and more durable repairs throughout Vijayawada.

High-Cost Investment for Enhanced Road Quality

Procured at a substantial cost of ₹1.48 crore, this advanced equipment is set to revolutionize the quality and longevity of road restoration works in the city. The machine, officially flagged off in Guru Nanak Colony on Wednesday, was introduced by Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), alongside Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ram Mohan Rao and other civic body officials.

Innovative Technology for Sustainable Repairs

MP Kesineni Sivanath highlighted the environmental and efficiency benefits of the infrared technology. "Infrared technology enables the rapid repair of potholes and uneven road surfaces by reheating and recycling existing asphalt, rather than relying on freshly heated bitumen," he explained. "Unlike conventional methods, this process restores damaged portions at consistent temperatures, ensuring durability comparable to new asphalt while slashing carbon emissions by up to 98 percent."

Funding and Program Support

The acquisition of this machine was made possible under the 15th Finance Commission grant and sanctioned as part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), emphasizing its role in promoting cleaner urban environments.

Rapid Repair Capabilities and Key Advantages

Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ram Mohan Rao emphasized the machine's efficiency, noting that even minor potholes across the city can now be repaired within just 15 minutes, thanks to this technology, aptly named "Road Doctor". Civic body officials detailed several key advantages:

  • Seamless Repairs: The machine eliminates cold joints, which are common weak points in traditional patchwork methods.
  • Enhanced Durability: It ensures uniform bonding between old and new asphalt, leading to longer-lasting road surfaces.
  • All-Weather Utility: Capable of functioning in moderate weather conditions, enabling consistent pothole repairs regardless of seasonal challenges.

This induction marks a proactive move by VMC to address road maintenance issues with cutting-edge solutions, promising smoother and safer travel for residents while contributing to environmental sustainability.
