Visakhapatnam Secures Prestigious Global Recognition with $1 Million Grant
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has achieved a remarkable international milestone by being selected as one of only 24 cities worldwide for the prestigious Mayors Challenge, organized by a global philanthropic organization. This selection brings with it a substantial grant of $1 million (approximately Rs 9 crore), complemented by comprehensive technical and operational support to implement transformative urban initiatives.
V-PULL Initiative: A Model for People-Centric Urban Development
At the heart of this achievement is the Vizag–People-Centric Urban Living Lab (V-PULL), the project submitted for the competition. This innovative initiative is built on three foundational pillars: a people-centred approach to urban planning, enhanced climate resilience strategies, and hyper-local community engagement mechanisms designed to empower residents in decision-making processes.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg emphasized that V-PULL has emerged as a model initiative for the municipal corporation, stating: "Visakhapatnam has gained international recognition for introducing innovative, citizen-driven solutions to reduce the impact of floods, cyclones, and extreme heatwaves. Among more than 630 applications submitted globally, Visakhapatnam stood out to secure this prestigious recognition."
From Shortlist to Implementation: A Journey of Innovation
The path to this achievement began with GVMC being shortlisted among the top 50 finalists in the initial stage of the competition. During this phase, the corporation received $50,000 in seed funding along with valuable technical assistance. This support enabled the implementation of a comprehensive pilot project at the local level, serving as a testing ground for innovative urban solutions.
During the pilot phase, GVMC conducted extensive ward-level community meetings to gather citizen input and foster participatory governance. The corporation tested advanced hyper-local sensing systems and data-driven decision-making tools while implementing climate resilience and disaster preparedness measures with active citizen participation. An effective feedback mechanism was also established between citizens and municipal departments, creating a continuous loop of communication and improvement.
International Recognition and Future Expansion Plans
Commissioner Garg described this international recognition for innovative, participatory urban governance as a matter of immense pride for the city. He elaborated: "It strengthens our belief that cities can lead transformative change through citizen participation and locally tested innovative solutions. This achievement validates our approach to urban development that places residents at the center of decision-making processes."
The substantial $1 million grant will be strategically utilized to strengthen the bottom-up approach to urban governance, enhance disaster preparedness capabilities, and expand these successful initiatives to more wards across Visakhapatnam. In the coming months, GVMC will constitute a dedicated innovation implementation team specifically tasked with expanding pilot programs to additional wards while strengthening partnerships with educational institutions, voluntary organizations, and the private sector.

Visakhapatnam now shares this distinguished global platform with leading international cities including Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Toronto, Cape Town, Budapest, Medellín, and Belfast. This placement among globally recognized urban centers underscores Visakhapatnam's growing reputation as an innovator in sustainable urban development and climate resilience strategies.
