Kalaburagi: The joint director of agriculture, Samad Patel, has issued a stern warning to traders in Kalaburagi district, emphasising that fertilisers must be sold to farmers at government-fixed prices. Strict action under the Fertilizer Control Order and the Essential Commodities Act will be taken against those found overcharging, Patel stated.
Surprise Raids Conducted
Speaking to TOI, Patel revealed that teams of agriculture officials conducted surprise raids on agricultural marts and fertiliser outlets in Jewargi, Yadrami, Chittapura, and Sedam taluks. During these inspections, officials examined distribution practices and stock records to ensure compliance with regulations.
Reason Behind the Crackdown
The raids were launched in response to complaints from farmers about fertilisers being sold at inflated rates. Patel explained that the objective is to initiate strict action against violators and protect farmers from exploitation. He added that officials have been directed to issue notices to vendors found violating norms.
Further Actions Planned
Patel stated that warehouses in market areas would also be raided, and legal action against licences would follow in the coming days. Action has already been initiated against agricultural marts and vendors across the district. A total of 28 stores were inspected in Jewargi, Yadrami, Sedam, Chittapura, and Chincholi, with show-cause notices issued to 26 stores.
Ongoing Monitoring
The raids are expected to continue for the next two months to curb overpricing of seeds and other agricultural inputs. Patel urged farmers to report any instances of overcharging in their taluks so that officials can take prompt action. He also cautioned farmers against fraudsters selling fake seeds and advised them to purchase inputs only from government-licensed outlets to avoid spurious products.
