Punjab Government Disburses Over Rs 305 Crore for Widowed and Destitute Women Pension
Punjab's Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur announced on Saturday that the state government has released more than Rs 305 crore under the Widowed and Destitute Women Pension Scheme up to May. The scheme aims to provide financial support to vulnerable women across the state.
Budget Allocation and Beneficiaries
The minister stated that the state government had earmarked over Rs 1,200 crore for the scheme during the financial year 2026-27. Currently, more than 6.91 lakh women across Punjab are benefiting from the initiative, enabling them to achieve greater financial security and lead their lives with confidence and self-respect.
Eligibility Criteria
Dr Baljit Kaur elaborated on the eligibility conditions: "The scheme is available to widowed and destitute women below 58 years of age. In addition, unmarried women aged 30 years and above are also eligible to avail of the benefits under the scheme. The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed Rs 60,000."
Impact on Financial Security
The pension scheme is designed to provide a safety net for some of the most marginalized women in Punjab. By offering regular financial assistance, the government aims to reduce poverty and empower women to live with dignity. The minister emphasized that the scheme has already reached a significant number of beneficiaries, contributing to their economic independence.
Government's Commitment to Social Welfare
The release of funds underscores the Punjab government's commitment to social welfare programs, particularly those targeting women in need. The substantial budget allocation for 2026-27 reflects the administration's priority on inclusive growth and support for vulnerable populations.
