Mass Poisoning of Stray Dogs in Telangana Village Sparks Police Case

In a shocking incident of animal cruelty, nearly 100 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned to death in Telangana's Mancherial district, according to police reports on Friday. This marks the latest in a series of mass killings of canines reported across the state in recent months.

Details of the Incident in Kishtapur Village

The tragic event occurred in Kishtapur village during the intervening night of March 7 and 8, as reported by news agency PTI. Animal welfare activist A. Goutham, who serves as a cruelty prevention manager with the Stray Animal Foundation of India, filed a formal complaint with authorities.

In his complaint, Goutham alleged that the dogs were killed through poisonous injections administered by two individuals hired by the village sarpanch and the gram panchayat secretary. Following the killings, the animals were reportedly buried near a riverbank.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Based on Goutham's complaint, police at the Jannaram police station have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The case names the sarpanch and gram panchayat officials as accused parties.

Authorities have confirmed that further investigation is currently underway to gather additional evidence and determine the full extent of involvement by local representatives.

Pattern of Similar Incidents Across Telangana

This incident follows several other reports of mass stray dog killings in different parts of Telangana during January and December of last year. The cumulative death toll from these previous incidents has reached approximately 1,300 animals.

In those cases as well, police registered complaints against sarpanchs, their associates, and gram panchayat officials following allegations made by animal welfare activists.

Possible Motivations Behind the Killings

The killings are suspected to have been orchestrated by some local representatives, including sarpanchs, allegedly to fulfill promises made to villagers ahead of the gram panchayat elections held in December last year. These promises reportedly centered on addressing the stray dog menace in their communities.

This pattern suggests a disturbing trend of using animal cruelty as a means to gain political favor, raising serious concerns about both animal welfare and ethical governance in rural areas.
