Three people have been booked by Karnataka police for shooting a video on a dangerous rock at Jog Falls, a popular tourist destination. The incident came to light after a reel showing the trio posing on the slippery, unstable rock went viral on social media.
Police Complaint Filed
Police Sub-Inspector Shantinath Paasane registered the complaint on behalf of the government. The case was filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for endangering public safety. The accused have been identified as residents of the local area.
The rock, known locally as the "tricky rock," is located at the edge of the waterfall and is extremely hazardous, especially during the monsoon season when water flow increases. Authorities have repeatedly warned tourists against venturing onto such spots.
Viral Video Sparks Action
The video, which was widely shared on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp, showed the individuals climbing onto the rock and performing stunts. It drew sharp criticism from netizens and local activists, who urged the police to take action. According to officials, the act not only put the individuals at risk but also encouraged others to engage in similar dangerous behavior.
Jog Falls, located in the Shimoga district, is one of the highest waterfalls in India. During the monsoon, the falls attract large crowds, but safety measures remain a concern. The police have intensified patrolling in the area to prevent such incidents.
Legal and Safety Implications
The accused have been charged under Section 336 of the IPC (act endangering life or personal safety of others). If convicted, they could face imprisonment of up to three months or a fine. The police have also issued a warning to the public against filming in restricted or hazardous zones.
This is not the first such incident at Jog Falls. Last year, two tourists were rescued after they slipped on the same rock. Authorities have now installed warning signs and barricades, but enforcement remains a challenge. The recent booking underscores the need for stricter implementation of safety rules at tourist spots.
