Mumbai: A 55-year-old man was arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday on charges of molesting a 21-year-old college student at Borivli railway station. The accused, identified as Prashant Chavan, is a pavement dweller near the station, police said.
The incident took place at 6:40 am on platform 3. The woman was waiting for a Churchgate-bound local train when Chavan approached her from behind and touched her inappropriately. The victim raised an alarm, leading to the immediate apprehension of the accused by bystanders and railway police.
An FIR was registered based on the woman’s statement. Authorities are now verifying whether Chavan has a prior criminal record. He has been charged under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
If convicted, Chavan faces a minimum prison sentence of one year, which may extend up to five years, along with a fine. The case highlights ongoing concerns about women’s safety on public transport, particularly at railway stations.
GRP officials have urged commuters to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior immediately. Further investigation is underway.
